Who is NAATI certified?
The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) is the accreditation body for translators and interpreters in Australia. To be recognised and certified by NATTI applicants must undertake an examination process, to prove they have an acceptable standard of expertise. Subsequently once applicants are certified they must also revalidate their credentials every three years to ensure their knowledge is up to date.
Types of NAATI Certification
There are various levels of accreditation or certification, depending on the experience of the translators and how much demand there is for their particular language.
- NAATI level 5 (Advanced Translator Senior)
- NAATI level 4 (Advanced Translator)
- NAATI level 3 (Professional Translator)
- NAATI level 2 (Paraprofessional Translator)
Note: NAATI currently only offers accreditation for 64 languages, where accreditation is not available NAATI will give ‘Recognition’ in that language.
When is a NAATI certified translation mandatory?
To ensure certain documents meet the standards required, to be accepted in Australia they need to be translated by a NAATI translator and the documents must include a NAATI stamp, signature, and certification on each page. The main entities that insist on NAATI translation are government agencies, who deal with legal matters, immigration, and citizenship applications. I.e., the Department of Home Affairs, The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other governmental authorities.
Foreign-issued personal documents that require NAATI accredited translations into English are:
- Birth certificates, Marriage certificates, Divorce certificates, Death certificates, Police clearances, Certificates of good conduct, Identity and Citizenship documents, University degrees, School diplomas, medical reports, Custody agreements, Wills, Evidence of de-facto relationship, etc.

Even when it is not required, there are still many benefits of using a NAATI translator. Although NAATI translators are not necessary for many non-governmental business translations, getting a correct translation is extremely important when it comes to any formal work or documents because of discrepancies between languages, linguistic nuances need to be understood as translations can end up not making sense, be confusing for the reader or lose their original meaning all together. Translations should be politically correct, culturally sensitive, and confidential.
